Surrey, BC – Surrey Art Gallery is pleased to partner with South Asian Arts Society and Monsoon Festival of Performing Arts to host 20 Years of South Asian Arts: A Photographic Journey, on display from August 2 until November 2. Admission is free.
A collaborative initiative between the Gallery and South Asian Arts Society, this exhibition marks a dual celebration with the 20th anniversary of South Asian Arts Society and the 10th anniversary of the Monsoon Festival of Performing Arts. The photographs highlight the rhythm, colour, and energy of dance, music, and theatre practices that have flourished in South Asian diasporas.
Since its founding in 2005, South Asian Arts Society has been committed to creating performance and educational opportunities for community members of all ages and artistic backgrounds. Their goal has always been to create spaces where South Asian culture is not only preserved but continuously reimagined through new projects, bold ideas, and collaborative artistic expressions.
“I am very excited to share the memorable moments that have shaped South Asian Arts Society over the past 20 years with the communities in Surrey where it all began. It feels like a true homecoming,” says Gurpreet Sian, Executive Director of South Asian Arts Society.
The photographs capture celebrations and expressions of diverse styles and traditions. Whether through the joyful vigor of a Bhangra dance performance, the soulful pulse of a Qawwali concert, or the eruption of laughter stirred by a sketch comedy show, these snapshots reflect and recall stories that have defined a 20-year journey.
Accompanying the photographs are objects that hold stories and cultural significance: a Dhol drum that drives the performance forward with its hard-hitting beats, the celebratory jingles of a Chimta, the bells of Ghunghroos that keep pace at the dancers’ feet, and traditional garments that dazzle the stage in bursts of colour.
The close of 20 Years of South Asian Arts: A Photographic Journey will be celebrated along with the Gallery’s upcoming exhibition Kinesthesia at the Gallery’s free Fall Opening Art Party on October 25 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
On Thursday, October 2 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Gurpreet Sian will share reflections about the photographs presented in the exhibition, as part of Surrey Art Gallery Association’s free Thursday Artist Talk series.
