Gateway Theatre is proud to open its 2025/26 Mainstage season with the B.C. premiere of Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson – Apt. 2B by acclaimed playwright Kate Hamill. This sharp and comedic reinvention of the classic detective tale is directed by Lauren Taylor and runs from October 16 to October 25.

Unlike any other Sherlock Holmes play, Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson – Apt. 2B follows the iconic duo as they stumble through post-pandemic life, solving crimes with chaotic brilliance. This feminist take is a must-see for fans of Sherlock Holmes, mystery lovers, and anyone looking for a fun night out with friends or family this fall.

“Last season, audiences adored Kate Hamill’s writing in our hilarious production of Pride & Prejudice and we are excited to present another of her adaptations that blends sharp wit, emotional truth, and a new look at these beloved characters. It’s an ideal way to launch what promises to be a season full of incredible stories,” said Barbara Tomasic, Gateway Theatre Executive Artistic Director. “I love how madcap, fast-paced and funny the show is. With a cast of four tackling more than eight roles, it’s going to be a bloody entertaining start to our season.”

Set in present-day 221B Baker Street, the play delivers nonstop laughs, clever twists, and unexpected heartbreaks. When Holmes is presented with a series of crimes that lead her to her greatest foe, she and Watson face their most difficult case yet: is this the moment that could break up their legendary partnership?

“This production not only entertains but also invites the audience into the heart of these characters,” adds Tomasic. “Audiences will enjoy actors stepping into known characters and reshaping them in surprising, deeply human ways. As always, our goal is to represent the community on stage and welcome you into stories that might reflect your life, your questions, or just the thrill of seeing something you never saw coming.”

Kate Besworth takes on the role of Sherlock Holmes; Rami Kahlon plays Dr. Joan Watson. Anita Wittenberg performs multiple roles including Irene Adler, Mrs. Hudson, and Mrs. Drebber. Mark Chavez portrays Inspector Lestrade, Elliott Monk, and other supporting characters.

The production is directed by Lauren Taylor, with Set and Props Designer Emily Dotson, Costume Designer Emily Friesen, Lighting Designer Jonathan Kim, and Sound Designer Mary Jane Coomber. They are joined by Fight Director Mike Kovac, Intimacy Director Lisa Goebel, and Stage Manager Angela Beaulieu, with Devon Vecchio as Assistant Stage Manager.

Tickets start at $37 and can be purchased online or by calling the Gateway Theatre box office. Performances are from Thursday, October 16 to Saturday, October 25.

Gateway Theatre’s 2025/26 season is built around the theme “Find Yourself Here”—stories that mirror the many facets of our lives: identity, place, freedom, and change. The theatre strives to create a space where everyone feels seen—on stage, in design, in casting, and in community. With this first MainStage show, Gateway sets the course for a season of bold choices, inclusive stories, and unforgettable performances. Gateway Theatre
