Indigenous Arts & Cultures in Richmond

Discover Indigenous Destinations and Experiences in Richmond

Richmond, located at the mouth of the Fraser River, is part of the traditional territory of the Musqueam First Nation, whose people have lived in the area for more than 4,000 years. With deep cultural and historical significance, Richmond offers visitors the opportunity to explore Indigenous heritage through art, storytelling, and immersive land-based experiences that highlight the Musqueam people’s profound connection to the land and waters of the region.

Learn About Musqueam History at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site in Steveston shares the story of the Indigenous fishing communities that have long relied on the Fraser River for sustenance and trade. Visitors can explore exhibits that highlight the Musqueam’s traditional fishing techniques and their historical involvement in the region’s salmon industry.

Explore Musqueam Cultural Sites and Interpretive Trails

Richmond’s extensive dyke trails and waterfront pathways follow ancient Musqueam travel and trade routes. Interpretive signage along some of these paths shares insights into Musqueam fishing, canoeing, and seasonal harvesting traditions. Visitors can also explore Iona Beach and Terra Nova Park, where Indigenous-led eco-tours provide a deeper understanding of the land and its resources.

Indigenous Art and Public Installations

Richmond is home to several Indigenous murals, carvings, and sculptures that reflect Musqueam traditions and Coast Salish artistry. The Musqueam Welcome Figures at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) greet travelers with stunning hand-carved cedar poles, symbolizing the Nation’s history and deep cultural ties to the region.

Attend Indigenous Cultural Festivals and Events

Richmond hosts several Indigenous-led cultural events throughout the year, including National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations, traditional storytelling sessions, and artisan markets featuring Musqueam artists. These events provide an opportunity to experience traditional drumming, singing, and dancing.

Indigenous-Led Eco-Tours and Wildlife Experiences

The Fraser River Estuary has been a crucial ecosystem for the Musqueam people for thousands of years. Indigenous-led eco-tours, canoe excursions, and wildlife experiences offer visitors an opportunity to learn about Musqueam land stewardship, traditional fishing techniques, and the cultural significance of the river and its diverse ecosystems.

Whether you’re admiring Indigenous artwork, exploring ancient Musqueam fishing grounds, or learning about traditional land and water stewardship, Richmond invites you to connect with the living cultural heritage of the Musqueam First Nation and their deep ties to the Fraser River and beyond.

The City of Richmond works in partnership and association with local cultural organizations, artists and local residents to help sustain and develop cultural heritage and individual expression as well as provide a wide range of cultural experiences and opportunities to residents and visitors
