How to explore the art scene in BC

Art has a way of connecting with the soul and spirit of a person in a way nothing else can. It has the ability to move you emotionally, to make you stop to meditate, or even to move you to take action. Studies show that art increases serotonin levels, and this doesn’t just come from the creation of art, but also from experiencing it. This is why places like art markets are so important to communities.

An art market is a marketplace where buyers and sellers meet to experience, purchase, or sell works of art or artistic services. The concept of art markets has existed for centuries, dating back to the European Middle Ages. History has it that some of the most significant art transactions took place at what is now understood to be an art market. These transactions took place either with a private person or a public institution.

Key components of the art market

There are three main components that the art market depends on:

  1. Collectors of artwork – There needed to be people who were willing to purchase or trade for art pieces. As with any market, you need demand for a product in order for it to be a viable product.
  2. Production of movable artworks – Supply was just as important as demand. No matter the art form, it had to be portable in some way.
  3. Ways and means to sell the artwork – this included markets, art fairs, art exhibitions, whether in studios or art shops, or even via a third party mediator such as dealers or auctioneers.

What kind of art does BC have?

People come to British Columbia for many reasons. The rich cultural diversity, the breathtaking sceneries, lush forests, and the overall buzz of the city. However, the art scene is definitely one that draws the crowd.

Canada is a huge melting pot where cultures mix, blend and influence the provinces, and BC certainly follows suit. The art scene in British Columbia is one of vibrancy and diversity. It is a major driving force for tourism in the province. Influenced by the Indigenous culture, as well as people from all over the world who have settled in the province and call BC home, the art scene definitely reflects this.

BC is filled with museums, heritage sites, art galleries, and art studios, both in rural remote areas and right in the busy city.

Bill Reid Gallery presents: NDN Giver NDN Giver explores the layered meanings within both everyday and extraordinary gifts that circulate through the potlatch. Blankets, coppers, canoes, prints, mugs, trade beads and devil’s club strung into necklaces all become carriers of law, memory, and relation to one another. The title NDN Giver reclaims a phrase rooted in colonialism that mocked Indigenous generosity. In reality, Read more...

Squamish is a bird watcher’s paradise. In the winter months, as the eagles gather en masse, it is truly a sight to behold. Every fall, Squamish becomes home to one of North America’s largest congregations of wintering Bald Eagles ((Haliaeetus leucocephalus). In the first 3 weeks of October, 10,000 salmon make their annual journey upstream to spawn, attracting over 1,300 Read more...
