Cultural Northern BC Road Trip: Prince George to Fort St. John

Embarking on a Northern BC road trip through the charming region of Prince George, Chetwynd, Dawson Creek, and Fort St. John promises an enchanting journey filled with cultural immersion, heritage exploration, and vibrant festivals. This adventure through northern British Columbia will showcase the rich arts and culture scene of the area. So fasten your seatbelts and let’s hit the road!

Our journey begins in Prince George, a city known for its thriving arts community. Start by visiting The Exploration Place, a museum dedicated to showcasing the history, science, and culture of the region. Continue on and don’t forget to visit Huble Homestead Historic Site, a living historic site that offers tours of heritage buildings such as the Huble House, Salmon Valley Post Office, and the Animal Shelter.  Delve into the indigenous heritage at the Prince George Native Art Gallery, where you can admire stunning indigenous artworks and learn about the traditions and stories they represent.

As we head towards Chetwynd on our northern BC road trip, be sure to stop by the Chainsaw Carvings Capital of the World. Witness the incredible talent of chainsaw carvers as they transform massive logs into intricate works of art. The Chetwynd International Chainsaw Carving Championship, held annually, is a must-visit event where artists from around the world compete for the title.

Continuing our journey, we reach Dawson Creek, famous as Mile Zero of the Alaska Highway. Discover the Dawson Creek Art Gallery, which hosts various exhibitions featuring local and regional artists. Take a stroll through downtown and admire the vibrant murals that adorn the city’s buildings, showcasing the area’s history and culture.

Time your visit to coincide with the Dawson Creek Fall Fair and Exhibition, a beloved event celebrating the agricultural heritage of the region. Enjoy thrilling rides, indulge in delicious fair food, and experience the excitement of rodeo shows and live performances.

Our final destination on this Canadian road trip is Fort St. John, a city steeped in cultural richness. Immerse yourself in the history and traditions of the region at the Fort St. John North Peace Museum. Learn about the indigenous cultures, fur trade, and the building of the Alaska Highway through engaging exhibits.

If you’re visiting in the summer, be sure to catch the North Peace Cultural Centre’s summer festivals. From music concerts to theatrical performances, these festivals offer a glimpse into the local arts scene. You can also explore the beautiful Centennial Park, where you might stumble upon live music performances and cultural events during the summer months.

To round off your road trip, plan your visit during the High on Ice Winter Festival in Fort St. John. This annual celebration showcases incredible ice sculptures, snowshoe races, ice fishing, and thrilling snowmobile demonstrations, adding a touch of winter magic to your Canadian road trip.

As you conclude your journey through these fascinating towns, you’ll carry with you cherished memories of cultural experiences, vibrant festivals, and the warmth of the communities you encountered. This Canadian road trip showcases the best of northern British Columbia’s arts and culture scene, leaving you inspired and connected to the rich heritage of the region.
