Drawing Essentials – A Drawing Class For Beginners

Offered by: Penticton Art Gallery

Location: Penticton, BC

If you’re new to drawing or want to refine your foundational skills, the Drawing Essentials class at the Penticton Art Gallery is an excellent place to start. This hands-on course explores basic techniques, line work, shading, and form — helping participants build confidence in their ability to draw what they see. A must for beginners seeking a strong foundation.

Program Highlights:

  • A 6‑session drawing course led by Shirley McMahon
  • Designed for adults aged 19+, with a beginner-friendly approach
  • Participants will explore graphite and charcoal techniques to render landscape features, including mountains, clouds, and trees
  • The course runs on Sundays from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, from September 7 through October 12

Figure Drawing – Fall 2025 – Improve Your Life Drawing Skills

Sharpen your observational and drawing skills in this upcoming Figure Drawing class in the fall of 2025. Hosted by the Cowichan Valley Arts Council, this course focuses on capturing the human form through gesture, proportion, and anatomy. Ideal for intermediate artists or motivated beginners wanting to explore life drawing in a supportive environment.

Runs from Wednesday, September 10 to December 10, 2025, with sessions held Wednesdays from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM

Format & Environment

This is a non-instructional, open studio-style figure drawing practice suitable for artists of all skill levels. While not a formal class, occasional informal tips or technique sharing may occur among participants

Studio Setup

The studio features drawing donkeys (easels with seats) and regular easels arranged in a circle around a central podium where live models (male and female) pose. You’ll work on a mix of short sketches and longer poses

Materials

Materials are not included—participants must bring their own drawing supplies

Draw Yourself A Seat – A Creative Drawing Course

Offered by: Museum of Vancouver

This interactive workshop encourages participants to explore themes of identity and design by drawing their ideal seat. Draw Yourself A Seat at the Museum of Vancouver is a creative exercise in self-expression through drawing and conceptual thinking. It’s an engaging choice for those who enjoy art as a medium for storytelling and personal reflection.

Program Highlights:

What it is

A 2-hour observational drawing workshop where participants sketch from chairs featured in the museum’s exhibitions — both historic pieces from Deep‑Seated Histories and contemporary designs from Future Makers — treating chairs as everyday icons of design.

Instructor

Led by Ellie Martin, an emerging artist and educator known for her accessible approach to drawing. She’s taught at Vancouver’s Open Studio Academy and UBC, bringing both humor and craft to the experience.

Date & Time

Sunday, August 24, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

Materials

Provided: newsprint/paper, charcoal, pencils, erasers.

Recommended to bring: markers, crayons, pencil crayons, sketchbooks. No wet media allowed (e.g., paint or loose ink).

Skill Level

All ages and experience levels welcome. No prior drawing experience necessary.

Throw a Balanced Cylinder – All Levels Pottery Course

Interested in pottery? Throw a Balanced Cylinder is a great all-levels ceramic class that teaches participants how to create symmetrical, wheel-thrown cylinders — a fundamental pottery skill. Whether you’re a total beginner or have some experience with clay, this class at Place des Arts offers supportive instruction and hands-on practice.

A three-day weekend workshop running Friday through Sunday, September 5 to 7, 2025.

Friday evening from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Saturday & Sunday afternoons from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM

Focus & Content:

Designed for all levels, this workshop helps participants build confidence at the pottery wheel through structured, process-based practice. You’ll learn foundational skills such as wedging clay, centering, pulling, and shaping a well-balanced cylinder.

Clay is included in the cost. If you have them, you’re encouraged to bring your own pottery tools. Note: No firing or finished pots—this workshop emphasizes technique and experience, not finished pieces.
