Previously home to canneries, railways, shipping wharves, a sawmill, packinghouse and even a cigar factory, City planners were challenged with a now defunct industrial area. The district was once the centre of the Okanagan fruit-packing industry and with much of the land in public ownership, the sixblock area was ripe for a reimagining. Significant planning and capital was devoted to turn this area into a Cultural District. An expanding collection of galleries, museums, performance venues and art facilities were joined by a resort hotel, upscale residential development and a beautiful lakefront which is now Waterfront Park. Since the start of 2000, the City’s planned vision of a peopled place, one that lives beyond business hours has taken shape. Today you will find year-round arts, entertainment, outdoor festivals, classes and workshops, boutiques and restaurants, natural spaces and public art.

The Cultural District was developed in what was once the centre of the Okanagan’s historical fruit packing industry. Through the dedication of the arts community, municipal leadership, strong community planning and major investments, the Cultural District has become the hub of Kelowna’s artistic and cultural activity.

The District’s six square blocks are home to the City’s cultural venues, including galleries, theatres and museums. There are also 21 pieces of public art on display, created by local, regional, national and international artists.

Each year, thousands of people head to remote camps across British Columbia to take on the demanding work of reforestation. For months at a time, they plant trees by hand in terrain that is uneven, rocky, and cluttered with debris from past logging, and in many areas visibly shaped by the growing impact of forest fires. In her series of Read more...

Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun Lets’lo:tseltun is one of Canada’s most outspoken and influential contemporary artists, confronting colonial suppression, environmental degradation, and the ongoing struggles for Indigenous sovereignty. Of Cowichan (Hul’q’umi’num Coast Salish) and Okanagan (Syilx) descent, his forty-year practice brings together traditional iconography, fearless critique, and biting satire to challenge and unsettle. Floor Opener presents a selection of works that are at once Read more...
