Indigenous Arts & Cultures in Trail

Discover Indigenous Destinations and Experiences in Trail

Trail, located in the West Kootenay region of British Columbia, is part of the traditional territory of the Ktunaxa, Sinixt (Lakes), and Syilx (Okanagan) Nations. For thousands of years, these Indigenous communities have lived in harmony with the land, relying on the Columbia River and surrounding forests for sustenance, travel, and cultural traditions. Today, visitors can explore Indigenous heritage through storytelling, art, and immersive outdoor experiences that honor the deep connection between First Nations and the land.

Learn About the Sinixt People and the Columbia River

The Sinixt (Lakes) people, one of the original inhabitants of the Columbia River Basin, have a long history in the Trail region. For millennia, they harvested salmon, hunted game, and traveled along the Columbia River, which remains central to their identity. Visitors can learn more about Sinixt heritage through interpretive signage along the river, Indigenous-led tours, and cultural events that highlight traditional fishing and land stewardship practices.

Indigenous Art and Cultural Installations

Throughout the Kootenay region, visitors can find public Indigenous art installations, including murals, totem poles, and sculptures that celebrate the artistic traditions of the Ktunaxa, Sinixt, and Syilx peoples. Local galleries and cultural centers showcase Indigenous artwork, featuring wood carvings, beadwork, and woven textiles.

Explore Nearby Ancient Indigenous Village Sites

Just outside of Trail, cultural and archaeological sites reveal ancient Sinixt and Ktunaxa village locations. Some Indigenous-led hiking and eco-tours provide insight into traditional hunting grounds, pit houses (kekuli), and sacred sites that have been used for generations.

Attend Indigenous Cultural Events and Gatherings

Trail and the surrounding communities host Indigenous cultural events, storytelling circles, and National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations throughout the year. These events offer visitors the opportunity to experience traditional drumming, dancing, and oral histories shared by local Elders and knowledge keepers.

Outdoor Adventures with an Indigenous Perspective

The forests, rivers, and mountains surrounding Trail are filled with Indigenous history. Visitors can participate in guided nature walks, canoe tours, and wildlife tracking experiences led by Indigenous guides who share traditional ecological knowledge, plant medicine teachings, and the spiritual connection between First Nations and the natural world.

Whether you’re learning about the deep-rooted history of the Sinixt people, exploring Indigenous art, or engaging with First Nations knowledge keepers, Trail invites you to experience the rich cultural heritage and living traditions of the Indigenous peoples who have called this land home for thousands of years.

Every community has its own unique cultural footprint.
