Indigenous Arts & Cultures in Pemberton

Discover Indigenous Destinations and Experiences in Pemberton

Pemberton, surrounded by breathtaking mountains and lush valleys, is located within the traditional territory of the Líl̓wat Nation, one of the St’át’imc (Lillooet) peoples. The Líl̓wat people have lived in this region for thousands of years, maintaining a deep connection to the land, rivers, and forests that sustain their way of life. Visitors to Pemberton can explore Indigenous culture through storytelling, art, and land-based experiences that celebrate the traditions and knowledge of the Líl̓wat Nation.

Visit the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre (SLCC)

A short drive from Pemberton, in nearby Whistler, the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre (SLCC) offers an immersive introduction to the histories, traditions, and artistry of both the Squamish and Líl̓wat Nations. The center features exhibits on traditional weaving, carving, and drumming, along with guided tours led by Indigenous cultural ambassadors.

Explore Indigenous-Led Outdoor Adventures

The Pemberton Valley is home to ancient trails and sacred sites that have been used by the Líl̓wat people for generations. Guided eco-tours offer visitors a chance to learn about traditional plant use, land stewardship, and the deep spiritual connection between the Líl̓wat people and the surrounding environment.

Cultural Festivals and Events

Throughout the year, the Líl̓wat Nation hosts cultural events, including storytelling circles, drumming performances, and artisan markets featuring traditional and contemporary Indigenous art. These events provide visitors with an opportunity to engage with the living culture of the Líl̓wat people and learn about their enduring traditions.

Indigenous Art and Public Installations

Public art installations and murals throughout the Pemberton and Whistler areas showcase the artistic expressions of Líl̓wat and Squamish artists, blending traditional Coast Salish and Interior Salish designs with modern interpretations.

Whether you’re exploring sacred landscapes, learning from Indigenous guides, or engaging with traditional storytelling, Pemberton invites you to experience the deep cultural heritage and ongoing traditions of the Líl̓wat Nation.
