Indigenous Arts & Cultures in Lake Country

Discover Indigenous Destinations and Experiences in Lake Country

Lake Country, nestled in the scenic Okanagan Valley, is part of the traditional territory of the Syilx (Okanagan) Nation. This stunning region, known for its pristine lakes, rolling vineyards, and abundant natural beauty, offers visitors an opportunity to engage with Indigenous culture through storytelling, art, and deep connections to the land.

Start your journey by visiting the Sncəwips Heritage Museum, located nearby in Westbank, which showcases the history, traditions, and contemporary life of the Syilx people. Exhibits highlight traditional knowledge, language, and the deep relationship between the Syilx Nation and the land, water, and wildlife of the Okanagan.

Immerse yourself in authentic Indigenous experiences by participating in guided cultural tours, traditional craft workshops, and storytelling sessions led by Syilx knowledge keepers. Explore interpretive trails and sacred sites that highlight the Indigenous perspective on land stewardship. You can also visit Indigenous-owned wineries that blend traditional practices with modern viticulture, offering a unique perspective on winemaking in the region.

Whether you’re enjoying Indigenous cuisine, admiring public art installations, or learning about ancestral traditions, Lake Country invites you to connect with the vibrant living heritage of the Syilx Okanagan people, celebrating their resilience, culture, and deep ties to the land.

Lake Country is situated in the Okanagan Valley region of British Columbia. The municipality is known for its Okanagan Lakes, exquisite orchards, vineyards, stunning landscapes and plenty of things to do.  When it comes to art & culture, one of the best spots to visit is the Lake Country Art Gallery which offers a variety of art exhibitions by local artists to explore. The art is inspired by the surrounding scenery and local history and culture. Apart from the gallery, the municipality hosts the Annual ArtWalk, which is a festival of creativity with tons of unique art exhibitions to see.
