Stephen Shore: Uncommon Places is a major photography exhibition presented at the Vancouver Art Gallery from March 27 to July 19, 2026. It features a compelling selection of works from Shore’s iconic series, created during road trips across North America between 1973 and 1981.
Widely regarded as a landmark in the history of photography, Uncommon Places helped establish colour photography as a serious artistic medium. Shore’s images capture everyday scenes—intersections, motel rooms, storefronts, and landscapes—transforming seemingly ordinary moments into striking visual compositions through careful framing, colour, and perspective.
Drawn from a significant recent donation of over 800 photographs, the exhibition offers one of the most comprehensive presentations of this influential body of work. Alongside well-known images of life on the road, the show highlights Shore’s photographs taken in Canada and reflects on the people and places that shaped his journeys.
Through its focus on the everyday, Stephen Shore: Uncommon Places invites viewers to reconsider the familiar, revealing the quiet beauty and complexity of ordinary life across North America.
