James Harry: Eye of the Ancestor
James Harry: Eye of the Ancestor is a major contemporary art installation presented at The Polygon Gallery, exploring themes of land, ancestry, and intergenerational knowledge through Coast Salish artistic practice.
The exhibition features a striking suspended sculpture crafted from yellow cedar, intricately carved with Coast Salish designs and enclosing a mirrored steel sphere. As viewers move around the piece, shifting reflections and perspectives create an immersive experience that emphasizes awareness, presence, and continuity.
Rooted in Indigenous visual language, the work transforms the concept of the “eye” into a spatial and symbolic form—inviting visitors to reflect on their relationship to place, history, and future generations. Through light, movement, and material, the installation embodies Indigenous ways of knowing, where knowledge is layered, relational, and revealed over time.
On view from April to October 2026, this exhibition highlights artist James Harry’s commitment to cultural continuity and resurgence, offering a powerful, contemplative entry point into the gallery space.
