Born in the Netherlands to an Artist Father and a mother who sang Opera, Mes Low grew up in an artistic environment. As a child Mes Low sat in her fathers atelier and absorbed all she could about painting and art. He taught her that copying and studying good art is a instrument to learn technique and so she for example, copied Japanese prints in watercolour and spent endless hours in museums with her family.

At the age of nine Mes Low wrote a letter to a local art school asking if she could study to be an artist. She was thought too young. Mes Low, in the 80’s, studied and worked with well-known Dutch painter Jan de Kok. She assisted the Artist with painting murals and taught classes in life drawing and colour theory. Mes Low started selling work very quickly and her profile within the community grew until she moved to the west coast of Canada in 1991, where she fell in love with the landscape and quaint homes in the area. Mes Low entered Emily Carr University of Art and Design, but illness hampered her from finishing her degree. Mes Low is an avid up-cycler and enjoys teaching Paint and Sip classes at 100 Braid St. Studios. Mes Low at present works full-time in her studio at 100 Braid St. Studios, New Westminster.

Mes Low is inspired are by The Group of Seven, Grant Wood, Hopper, Emily Carr and Rousseau. Contemporary inspirations are Dana Irving and Ross Penhall.

Over the years many of her paintings have found their way into private collections both in Europe and Canada.

Bill Reid Gallery presents: NDN Giver NDN Giver explores the layered meanings within both everyday and extraordinary gifts that circulate through the potlatch. Blankets, coppers, canoes, prints, mugs, trade beads and devil’s club strung into necklaces all become carriers of law, memory, and relation to one another. The title NDN Giver reclaims a phrase rooted in colonialism that mocked Indigenous generosity. In reality, Read more...
