The Whey-ah-Wichen Canoe Festival is an annual Indigenous cultural event hosted by the Tsleil-Waututh Nation at their ancestral village site, Whey-ah-Wichen (Cates Park) in North Vancouver.
Held each year in early summer, the festival centres around traditional canoe racing—an activity deeply rooted in Tsleil-Waututh identity as the “People of the Inlet.” Canoe pulling has been part of their way of life for generations, with a modern revival dating back to 1910 when a renowned racing canoe sparked renewed interest in the sport.
The festival brings together canoe crews from Indigenous communities across coastal British Columbia and Washington State to compete in a range of races, including youth, women’s, men’s, and masters categories. All races are conducted in traditional dugout canoes, showcasing both skill and cultural continuity.
Beyond competition, the event is a vibrant celebration of Coast Salish culture and community. It typically features:
- Cultural exchange between Nations
- Youth engagement and mentorship through sport
- Arts, crafts, and local vendors
- Family-friendly activities and community gatherings
Open to the public, the festival welcomes spectators to experience Indigenous traditions, support participating teams, and connect with the living culture of the Tsleil-Waututh people in a meaningful, community-focused setting.
