May’d on Gabriola returns with more than 100 participating artists, artisans and performers, at 40 locations across Gabriola island.
GABRIOLA ISLAND, BC — May’d on Gabriola showcases the rich and diverse creative spirit of Gabriola Island, from soap to songs. The island-wide celebration takes place during the May long weekend, Friday, May 15 through Sunday, May 17.
This free, self-guided event features more than 100 participating artists, artisans and performers in 40 open studios, markets and a lively lineup of performances. Visitors are invited to explore the event at their own pace—meeting artists in their studios, purchasing directly from local creators. Gabriola is home to many painters, potters, woodworkers, basket weavers, fibre and textile artists, jewellery makers, sculptors, photographers and artists focused on upcycling everything from nautical parts to purses.
“May’d on Gabriola invites everyone to get out and experience the island’s creative heartbeat firsthand,” says Cindy-Sue Rabinovitch. “It’s about opening doors—into studios, onto stages, and into a vibrant community of artists and artisans.”
Music and theatre lovers will enjoy an eclectic mix of performances: comedy by local comedian Scarlet Chen and a vaudeville musical theatre show by the Gabriola Players.
All weekend, enjoy free live music performed by local singers, songwriters and bands at the Gabriola Theatre Centre, alongside food trucks serving hot meals and cool treats.
The popular Saturday Farmer’s Market at Agi Hall, and the Sunday Market at Silva Bay will both open for the season on this same weekend. Kicking off the beginning of a busy tourist season for the small island which is 14km long and
Gabriola is just a 25-minute ferry ride from Nanaimo Harbour. The island offers visitors a perfect spring getaway, which feels distinctly different from the nearby city. Day trips are made possible with ferry sailings frequently throughout the day, or make a weekend trip by supporting small Canadian-owned businesses and reserving on-island accommodations. The island is home to several popular ocean-view lodges, many private cabins for rent, charming bed and breakfasts and scenic camping options.
