In my home studio, I create delicate art pieces and jewellery, mostly using glass.
I use a torch mixing oxygen with gas to produce an intense heat that melts glass onto a steel rod, “mandrel”, for flame sculpting or onto an Italian hollow steel pipe, “canello”, for blowing.
Working with glass is exciting and challenging. Like juggling several balls in the air – except you’re creating a molten gather of glass on a rod, spinning the rod so you don’t lose the hot blob onto your bench, keeping the mass at the right temperature, rolling/pushing/tweaking to shape it, or getting ready to blow it into a sphere. It can be nerve-wracking, but I love it!
I name each piece. It is my hope to evoke – a rush of water, a quiet forest, or the beauty of the night sky.
