They’re one of the biggest names from the ’90s Canadian East Coast alternative scene, and it’s an accolade-filled quarter-century career the Salmon Arm Folk Music Society is thrilled to bring to Song Sparrow Hall Sunday, March 5, 2023.
Born in Halifax and based in Toronto, Sloan grew to Canadian indie rock fame in the early ’90s when bassist and vocalist Chris Murphy, guitarists and vocalists Jay Ferguson and Patrick Pentland and drummer and vocalist Andrew Scott brought their rare chemistry to the scene.
“When you think of Canadian alternative rock, you think of Sloan,” says Tobin. “Generations of music fans are in for a treat when this Canadian icon takes the stage at Song Sparrow Hall in March.”
Throughout their 30-year history as Canadian indie rock heroes, Sloan has grown from their fizzy, fuzzed-out sound to their later Dylan-esque streams of consciousness and short blasts of power pop.
With more than 250 songs, 30 singles with airplay on Canadian Rock Radio stations and their new release Sloan Steady, Sloan racked up nine JUNO nominations and won Best Alternative Album in 1997 before being named one of Canada’s top five bands of all time in a CBC critics poll.
