The Haq and History exhibition, originally developed by the South Asian Studies Institute (SASI) and the Royal British Columbia Museum (RBCM) in 2020 offers visitors the chance to reflect upon stories from and about South Asian Canadian Immigrants, including details about work, home life, and keeping cultural traditions alive in BC. It has been traveling across the province, and will be on display at the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre (NNMCC) from October 19, 2024 to January 25, 2025.
As part of the traveling exhibit opportunity, SASI invited all receiving institutions to apply for research assistance to help unearth connections of our local history and South Asian Canadians, to offer visitors a chance to learn not only about the lives of South Asian Canadians in our area, but also to add to the content of the core exhibit to help deepen our collective knowledge exponentially.
Tiffany Lau, from SFU’s Academy to Community program researched the intersection of South Asian and Japanese Canadian communities for Japanese Canadian content in this exhibit which centers around the Toyota, Urabe, and Yano families in Paldi on Vancouver Island.
We are grateful for the support of SASI and RBCM in bringing this important exhibit to our community.
We invite the general public to visit the exhibit to learn more about South Asian Canadian history. Admission is by donation.
