The Process The development of the yew wood cutting board begins with collecting the raw material in the woods. The logging roads of Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) provide me with access to logged areas of forest that still contain high-grade wood after the logging companies have left. Although yew wood is prized for its unique quality of grain characteristic, and rare because of its slow growth, there is no demand for the raw log. It is simply left where it was felled. I locate yew wood at these cut blocks and salvage it from rotting on the ground. |
