From the Desk of Trudy Van Dop...

Every year brings its own hurdles and obstacles and yet, these challenges can become a springboard for inspiration, strength and growth. The New Year is a wonderful time to slow down and take a look at what has passed and appreciate where we've been and where we're going. I encourage you to take the time to reflect on the people who have helped you along the way, your family, friends and business associates.

Our personal connections and partnerships are truly what allow us to grow. Everyday I take a moment to recognize some of the people and organizations that have inspired my work on the Arts & Cultural Guide year after year.

10th Edition – Arts & Cultural Guide to BC

It is the people behind the work, the businesses that showcase it and their joint passion and commitment to their art forms that continue to be an inspiration to me. We are privileged to work with over 300 artists and organizations, sharing their contributions with our readers.

7th Annual BC Cultural Crawl

This tremendous opportunity to celebrate what truly makes British Columbia the greatest place on earth, its diverse cultures, rich history and exceptional art turns 7 in August. Last year over 70 communities from all corners of the province participated by hosting their own crawls. Special recognition goes out to all of the Community Ambassadors or Champions who helped to organize their community's crawl and to our media partners; channel m, VanNet Newspaper Group, Vancouver Sun and the Rogers BC Radio Group.

Creating Urban Wealth through Culture

Glen Murray – Keynote Address at the BC Museum's Association 50th Anniversary Conference

Glen Murray, former mayor of Winnipeg and chair of the National Roundtable on the Environment and Economy, has a vision. Build dynamic urban centres on foundations of culture, creativity and quality of place, and let these centres drive the economy.

Murray, in his rapid-fire and enthusiastic conference keynote, laid out a mini economic look at society, values and the role of cities in the greater nation state. His argument states that cities need to move beyond the "Three P" agenda (police, pipes and pavement) where utilitarian values absorb all of the energy and money, to an agenda where cities are enabling a "creative knowledge economy" – a place that attracts and retains creative people and businesses.

"Build dynamic urban centres on foundations of culture and quality of place, and let these centres drive the economy."

To start the process?
Murray advocated for the following to provide your city with its "value proposition".

•   Where you can, co-locate with other cultural activities and investments in the service heart of the city. Look to the library, the post office and the liquor store; where are they? Get these key anchors into the centre of your city. You and they will help sustain the smaller businesses.

•   Move the museum from the "cost" side of the ledger to the "benefit" side. What benefit do you provide that would not be there if the museum did not exist?

•   Look to understand and connect with the creative cultural assets in your city; not just the non-profits and governments, but the "creative business and industries" (bookstores, filmmakers, new media / graphic companies)

•   Undertake cultural mapping projects to visually demonstrate the presence of cultural assets and the creative economy in your city.

•   Participate in and help sustain creative networks.

In the global economy the famous adage "location, location, location" has taken on new meaning. Businesses do not have to move. But employees can. While a company may be based in Vancouver, its employees can live in Yellowknife, St. John's and Regina. They have a choice – and you want them to choose your community.
