You’ll want to want to swipe right on this blind date | Blind Date, January 9–19, 2019 | Main Stage at Surrey Arts Centre
Surrey Civic Theatres and Arts Club Theatre Company present Rebecca Northan’s critically acclaimed Spontaneous Theatre creation Blind Date—a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants fusion of clown, improv, theatre, and social experiment—at the Main Stage at Surrey Arts Centre (13750 88 Avenue) from January 9 to 19.
People-watching goes to a whole new level in the fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants fusion of clown, improv, theatre, and social experiment that is Blind Date. Audiences vicariously experience all the exhilaration and excitement of new love as Mimi goes on a different blind date each night, with a willing gentleman from the audience.
Blind Date has toured around the world, with sold-out runs in New York, London’s West End, and Toronto. Reviewers have hailed Blind Date as “fearless…and very funny” (The New York Times), “risky and rewarding” (The Georgia Straight), and “a high-wire act of improvised theatre” (The New York Post).
The cast mingles in the lobby before the show to find audience members who might be interested in participating. Once inside the theatre, Mimi doesn’t reveal who her Date will be until the show begins.
Blind Date was created in 2009 by actor, director, writer, and producer, Rebecca Northan. There are now several other actors trained in the title role of the original Blind Date, as well as a Queer Blind Date.
Northan said, “The thesis of Blind Date has always been ‘Everyone is loveable.’ There is great joy in leaning forward in your seat and watching two strangers attempt to connect.” About the connection between Mimi and her audience-member-turned-Romantic-Hero Northan adds, “There is only truth, breathing, and profound listening coupled with open-heartedness and a playful spirit.”
