  • International Artist Monica Gewurz will be at Art!Vancouver 2020

Monica Gewurz is thrilled to be showcasing for the fifth time at ArtVancouver, the international art fair that takes place at the Vancouver Convention Centre April 16-19, 2020.

Monica’s paintings have been recently featured in the labels of the known Vancouver Island-40Knots Winery fortified wine and in their VinoSpa skin care line. Monica has successfully exhibited in numerous juried shows in 2019 in BC and the US, including one in Singapore. She showcases year-round at Ukama Gallery in Granville Island. Her work is found in corporate and private collections throughout Canada, the US, Europe, Mexico, Peru, Australia, New Zealand, China and Japan.

Monica will be showing a new collection of work at this year’s ArtVancouver. She is excited to share her highly textured, iridescent, colourful acrylic and oil abstract paintings, often worked with a palette knife, unconventional tools and metallic patinas.

Texture and thin layers of colour are two key elements in her work as she aims to blur the line between painting and sculpture. She invites you to touch the work by integrating natural and man-made repurposed materials, including textiles, paper and plastic, each layer of colour and medium allowing you to experience the paintings – perhaps sparking memories, perhaps freeing your mind to wander, imagine, and dream. Through materials and her own travels and life experiences, she strives to make work that can be understood across cultures.

Drawing on her background in science, she creates intentionally imperfect paintings inspired by nature’s geometric repetitions, patinas, time-worn layers and the colours of dawn and dusk. She is fascinated by the contrasts of organic and inorganic elements in nature, and attempts to capture its breadth, from the vastness of infinite space to the miniscule, as viewed through the lens of a microscope.

This past year was a busy one as Monica volunteers as a Board Director of The North Vancouver Community Art Council, the North Shore Artist Guild and as a fundraiser for the Nature Trust of BC.

Monica donates part of her proceeds to the Brooke Foundation in the UK and to the SPCA in Vancouver. She donates art work to the Children’s Heart Foundation, Lions Gate Hospital, BC Cancer Society, Loving Spoonful, Museum of Northwest Art, The Nature Trust of BC, Pacific Salmon Foundation, Vancouver Aquarium, among others.

Monica has developed a personalized style that translates and interprets nature through saturated layers of transparent glazes. Her art is a transformative interpretation rather than a literal rendering with the intention of evoking the emotion, memory, and essence of worldwide seascapes with a focus on the west coast.  Her art calms your mind and soothes the Soul! Working with texture and layers in my mixed media paintings gives me an opportunity to express nature in an abstract way, to encourage the viewer to be moved by its beauty, and to create a mood that will seduce the eye and inspire the spirit.” Monica Gewurz
